Meet the Founder

Bébette Smith (Nee Marie Helene Vanden Brugge). Was born and raised in Belgium where she met her husband Larry. After their marriage and several assignments in Europe, they ended up at  Fort Gordon, Georgia.

They both really liked it here and decided to make Augusta their home.

After a 20 year career in the teaching field, and wanting a career change, Bébette attended the Chocolate Academy in Wieze, Belgium where she learned the basics of chocolate making under Jean Pierre Wybauw, a renowned Belgian chocolatier.

Bébette opened La Bonbonniere in June 2005, at Fury's Ferry Station in Augusta, GA and  her shop offers a variety of "pralines" as they call them in Belgium.

Following Bébette's passing in May 2026, her beloved La Bonbonnière was entrusted to her daughter, Melody. We are honored to continue her legacy, crafting each chocolate with the same care, passion, and dedication that makes La Bonbonnière so special.​

​We carry on her legacy creating every chocolate in house here in Augusta using Callebaut chocolate, fresh ingredients and traditional Belgian recipes.
